Some of the Nevada Bundys are free! For those that do not know, the federal Judge Gloria Navarro chastised the federal prosecutors in court on Monday, Jan. 8, 2018 stating the prosecution’s conduct was “grossly shocking” and “flagrant.” Yep, information in the 3,300 pages of documents that the prosecutors finally released to the Bundy defense team was damning. Judge Navarro dismissed the trial against Cliven Bundy, his two sons, Ammon and Ryan Bundy, and Ryan Payne “with prejudice,” which means the feds can’t retry these four for the same crimes. Hooray!
In her hour-long explanation, Judge Navarro touched on BLM Special Agent Larry Wooten, who has become a hero. In December, an email was leaked to Matt Shea, who is a state assembly representative in Washington, where Wooten listed issues regarding the Bundy investigation. Wooten was an investigator on the Bundy case and was complaining of unethical actions, cover-ups and malfeasance. In February of 2017, the prosecuting attorneys had enough and Wooten was reassigned — taken off the Bundy investigations.
His email explained that former BLM Special Agent-in-Charge (Dan) Love specifically and purposely ignored U.S. Attorney’s Office and BLM civilian management direction and intent, as well as Nevada State Official recommendations, in order to command the most intrusive, oppressive, large scale, and militaristic trespass cattle impound possible. Wooten added that the BLM used excessive force, civil rights and policy violations.
I don’t know how much of the Wooten info Judge Navarro has read, but the Bundy Defense Team has hammered her with significant flagrant violations, lies and cover-ups. Cliven was in his blue prison jumpsuit with shackles on his ankles, when the judge ordered him released. He tried to leave, but was not allowed nor were cameras permitted in the courtroom to record the situation. When Cliven did leave the court house, he was dressed in his cowboy suit and hat.
More than 100 supporters and family were at the court house, including his wife, Carol. I watched one of his first interviews and was impressed with his knowledge of the situation. He said something that surprised me and I want to share it. He is speaking about the Dec. 20, 2017 trial, where she originally dismissed the trial: The Judge Navarro, she did the government a very big favor if we would have gone on for just a few more hours, even, there would have been a lot of discovery made, there would have been entrapment brought forth, there would have been Lombardo’s lies brought forth, there were a lot of things she covered up and protected from coming out to the media and the people. If we go back to court, it will all come out.
So, to me this means that Cliven, Ryan and Ammon were willing to continue the trial, where the jurors would have heard many specifics. It sounds like the Bundys were getting way too close to exposing many truths.
Now our thoughts turn to the rest of the 19 arrested for the Bunkerville stand-off. Two more of Cliven’s sons are still in prison awaiting trial. Yes, we are in hopes the truth will set these men free and soon.
And I wonder, just as Cliven does: Why are we allowing the federal government, these bureaucracies, to have armies?
Monday was a busy day. I was able to go in to Bob’s Ranch House and meet Duane Ehmer for breakfast, along with his girl friend, Cindy, and Maureen Peltier, who is documenting his ride on facebook. Duane told me he was shoeing a horse, when he heard on the local PBS radio station that terrorists had taken over the Malheur Refuge in Eastern Oregon early January 2016. As a Desert Storm U.S. Army veteran, he decided to show up and see what was going on. He didn’t want foreign terrorists doing anything in his USA.
When he arrived, there were no foreign terrorists only folks like him. And, unexpectedly, the federal government labeled Duane a terrorist. Being just a cowboy, he naturally took his good horse Hellboy with him. After some days, the FBI made a deal with Duane. If would help talk the Bundys out of the refuge, they would not arrest him. He went back and forth and participated in those talks. When the Bundys and other supporters finally walked out, Duane was treated as one of the terrorists. The FBI lied. Duane and others were arrested, stripped naked and stood for over an hour in the below freezing temperatures.
He was taken to jail in Portland and held for over a month. When Duane was released, he was naked! His clothes only showed up last month. Duane was able to continue his cowboy ranch hand job under house arrest with an ankle bracelet that bloodied his leg from rubbing on the saddle.
Last February 2017, his trial lasted a month and he was allowed very few witnesses or defense by the judge. (I didn’t even know the trial was being held.) The jury found him guilty of one federal felony. You see, Duane was surrounded by federal snipers and decided to use a piece of equipment to dig himself a fox hole. It wasn’t very big. But, he was given a sentence of one year and one day for defacing federal property. Seems like a pretty steep sentence. I’ve heard that Greenies get away with defacing federal property quite often. Hypocrisy.
Originally, Duane was to serve his sentence in Oregon, but that was changed to the federal prison in Lompoc, CA. To raise awareness of the atrocity, Duane is riding Hellboy south to Lompoc and must be there by Jan. 24, 2018. Support rallies are being held along the way. Hellboy is a tall horse and covers ground quickly. Duane said he is Polish/Arab.
Randy Risner has a saddle shop in Montague. He came over with a new saddle pad, lead rope and leggings for Hellboy, which he and several friends donated. They were appreciated. It was raining, when Duane threw on his yellow slicker and headed on down Highway 3. The Bundys and several supporters were acquitted in their two trials last year for the refuge stand-off. Sure is a shame to see the injustice of Duane’s situation.
Scott Valley Protect Our Water will meet on Thurs., Jan. 25, 2018 at the Fort Jones Community Center. Lynne Bryan will be there to explain how the “Citizens for Orderly Growth” created the Scott Valley Area Plan in the 1970s. Pretty interesting! Hope you can make it at 7 p.m.
